Coliform bacteria, while not a health threat in themselves, are often an indicator that other bacteria may be present.
Hand sanitizers will be used in lieu of handwashing.
The school in west Reno is served by its own water well and the Washoe County School District is required to test the quality of water monthly. December’s test, conducted Friday, showed positive for total coliforms.
“As soon as the test results were received, we immediately took the steps recommended by the Washoe County Health Department and began disinfecting the entire system from the well head to the outlets with bleach,” said Steve Hull, chief communications and public affairs officer. “We are taking water samples again today for testing and will continue to do so until the quality comes into normal ranges.”
Parents and staff at the school were alerted on Saturday to the issue with a Connect ED call, the district’s telephone messaging system. A letter with additional details was sent home with students on Monday.
The cause of the problem is not yet known. A similar problem was encountered in 2006 at Pleasant Valley Elementary School and the same treatment regimen used then resolved the problem within a day.
The well has been treated and the district is awaiting the results of further tests.
