SPARKS — The City Council has a full day of business today, starting with a demolition at 11 a.m. and ending this evening with its regularly scheduled meeting.  The Redevelopment Agency will hear updates at 1 p.m., between the two events.

In another step toward Victorian Square redevelopment, council members will be swinging the hammer at a building purchased through eminent domain proceedings, which city officials said was necessary for redevelopment plans.

The building at 1212 Victorian Ave., a two-story brick structure located near Dotty’s Casino, will be torn down with the help of council members. The former home of Paddy and Irene’s Irish Pub, a convenience store and a few upstairs apartments will be demolished by Empire Contractors. Empire will be paid $41,725 to tear down the building, according to contract documents.

The city bought out the building’s tenants over the summer, with Paddy and Irene’s Pub moving down the street to 1218 Victorian Ave.

According to city redevelopment officials, the structure needs to be torn down to make way for redevelopment, which includes a north-south connector road, joining Victorian Avenue on the south with the Avenue of the Oaks on the north.

Following the demolition, the council will travel to City Hall on Fourth Street for a 1 p.m. meeting of the Redevelopment Agency.  There, the agency is scheduled to discuss another Victorian Square property that the city has acquired and torn down.

The former Pacific Pawnbrokers location just down the street from 1212 Victorian Ave. was purchased by the city in a more than $1 million deal in April 2008.  It has since been demolished.  Redevelopment officials will be discussing whether to install grass or a parking lot on the now vacant land.

The agency will also hear reports on brainstorming sessions about Victorian Square as well as agency updates from city redevelopment staff.

Following that meeting, at 3 p.m., the Sparks City Council will see the unveiling of the city’s new logo.  According to city spokesman Adam Mayberry, the logo is the result of many hours of surveys and troubleshooting.  And while the lines and curves of a new logo will be presented for the council’s approval, the color has yet to be added to the design.  According to Mayberry, this step will come after the design approval.

In other business, the council will hear the first reading of an annexation bill requesting that the Truckee Meadows Regional Water Reclamation Facility just south of Sparks’ city limits be brought into the city limits.
