SPARKS – Working under a grant provided by the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety, the Sparks Police Department, along with other local and state agencies, conducted an aggressive seat belt enforcement campaign aimed at enforcing seat belt violations recently.

This enforcement effort was part of the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign and was also aimed at educating the public in regards to the benefits of seat belt use and properly restraining children while in a motor vehicle. Sparks officers stopped 201 vehicles during the event with the following results.

• Seat belt citations: 44

• DUI arrests: 3

• Speeding citations: 75

• Revoked Licenses: 12

• No Insurance: 22

• Miscellaneous citations: 63

• Warnings: 52

In the state of Nevada, failing to wear a wearing a seat belt is not considered a primary offense, which means the vehicle must be stopped for a separate traffic violation before a seat belt citation may be issued. Currently in the city of Sparks, the fine for not wearing a seat belt is $78.
