According to Sparks police, at about 9:15 p.m. on Friday, 32-year-old David Sanchez, of Reno, went to the residence at 6604 Fireburst Drive to look for his wife. The couple are estranged and Sanchez's wife has a temporary restraining order against him. One of the conditions of that order was that Sanchez stay away from the Fireburst address, which is where his estranged wife's family lives.
Sanchez was intoxicated when he arrived at the home Friday night, police said. Sanchez entered through an unlocked front door and was confronted by several family members, including 29-year-old Roberto Corona and Corona's mother, Maria Lopez.
Sanchez demanded to know where his wife was. She was not at the address at the time of the incident and an argument ensued between Lopez and Sanchez. After Corona stepped between the two, Sanchez took a handgun from underneath his shirt and fired a single round into Corona's chest.
Family members then struggled with Corona for control of the gun. They were able to gain control of the gun, subdue Sanchez and tie his hands and feet with rope until police could arrive.
Police and medical personnel tried to revive Corona but he died at the scene.
Sanchez was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was later booked on charges of murder with a deadly weapon, ex-felon in possession of a firearm, burglary with a firearm and violation of a restraining order.
