Reno soldier among 7 killed in Afghanistan crash

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Defense says a Reno man was one of seven soldiers killed when their helicopter crashed in Afghanistan.

The department says Sgt. Josue E. Hernandez Chavez was killed Monday. The 23-year-old was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Regiment (Airborne), Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.

Hernandez is the second soldier from Reno Killed this month in Afghanistan.

Army Pfc. Kevin Thomson was one of eight members from the 61st Armored Cavalry Regiment killed Oct. 3 in Kamdesh, Afghanistan during a firefight with insurgents. The 22-year-old was serving with the 4th Infantry Division, headquartered in Fort Carson, Colo.
