“This is a situation that is ready-made for criminals looking for a chance to steal a vehicle,” said Reno Police Sergeant Matt Dellavella. “Unfortunately, people will not only lose their vehicle but also face the possibility of a home burglary occurring later using their own house keys that may also be on their vehicle key ring. There is also the potential for identity theft using documents that may be in the vehicle when it is stolen, including vehicle registration and insurance information.”
According to Dellavella, vehicles are also commonly stolen while left running and unattended at gas stations, convenience stores and ATMs.
