LAS VEGAS (AP) — The federal Internal Revenue Service said a deadline is approaching for Nevada homebuyers seeking first-time homebuyer tax credits.

IRS spokesman Raphael Tulino in San Diego said 20,222 homebuyers in Nevada have filed this year for the credit of 10 percent of the purchase price of the home, up to $8,000.

Tulino said the deadline for closures on home purchases is Dec. 1, unless Congress extends the dates.

The IRS said 1.4 million taxpayers nationwide have filed for the credit under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

It's generally available to homebuyers with qualifying income levels who have never owned a home or haven't owned one in the past three years.
