Nationally, the unemployment rate stood at 9.7 percent in August.
Officials say Nevada's statewide unemployment rate a year ago was 7 percent.
Compare that with December 2007 -- before the recession. The state jobless rate then was 5.2 percent.
Officials say construction has been hit particularly hard, along with leisure and hospitality services.
The only sectors to add jobs in August were education and health care.
