The Raiders built a large halftime lead and put it in cruise control after the break to improve to 3-0 in High Desert League play with a 72-56 win.
Reed knew coming in it would have to stop the Miners’ leading scorers Taylor Sylvester and Ashley Armstrong after the two posts combined for 27 points in a tournament game against the RHS-crew earlier this season.
Sylvester and Armstrong were well under their season averages of 18 and 16 points respectively. The Raiders held both to six points on the night.
“That was the game plan,” Reed coach Sara Schopper said. “We just wanted to make sure we were watching them flash to the high post. I think the key also was to pressure the guards and make it harder to bring the ball up the floor.”
Reed’s two forwards had little trouble finding the bucket. Sophomore Danielle Peacon paced the Raiders with 17 points despite being limited by foul trouble and senior Kayla Williams added 14 in the winning cause.
Reed blew out to a 41-21 lead after the first half and owned the third quarter until Schopper started tinkering with her lineup.
“I wanted to bring different rotations in, and I knew the different rotations would make our defense not as strong,” Schopper said. “I wanted to get the other girls in the game for when I need them.”
The Raiders scored 12 of the first 16 points in the third period only to see Manogue rattle off six straight points. Reed led 57-34 after three quarters, but Nicole Aboumrad made the final score a little more respectable with nine of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter.
The Miners tallied more points in the fourth quarter than they did in the entire first half and outscored the Raiders 22-15 in the final eight minutes.
Reed benefited from strong guard play to go along with its inside presence. Audrey Campbell added 13 points, while Erica McKenzie knocked down a trio of 3-pointers on the way to 11 points.
Jordan Novsek had 11 points for the Miners.
The Raiders (10-5, 3-0 HDL) host McQueen Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:15 p.m.
