In its second meeting since taking Washoe County’s suggestion to hold meetings every other month, the Spanish Springs Citizen Advisory Board meeting will take place today at 7 p.m. at the community center at Lazy 5 Regional Park.

On the agenda for September is an issue that has been a point of tension when discussing many new construction projects along Pyramid Highway: safety. The board will be addressing pedestrian and driver safety on Pyramid Highway approaching Lazy 5 Regional Park as well as the growing neighborhoods north of the park.

One such project that has brought traffic safety issues to the CAB’s attention is the Village At The Peak shopping center, which is proposed to be built on Pyramid Highway and Campo Rico Drive. The board will review a comprehensive plan amendment for the project at tonight’s meeting.

The plan amendment is asking for the Spanish Springs Area Plan to increase the overall commercial and industrial regulatory zone from 9.1 percent to 9.86 percent. The amendment is also asking that more than 100 acres be re-designated from general rural and low-density suburban land use to industrial, commercial, medium density and open space land use.

In addition to reviewing the plan amendments for the Village At The Peak project, the board has a few housekeeping item to address, including rescheduling the Nov. 11 meeting because it conflicts with the Veteran’s Day holiday.

Also, the board is looking for a member-at-large to fill an open seat. Previous CAB chairman Vaughn Hartung left to join the county planning commission and was replaced in the chair position by current CAB member Steve Grosz. The CAB will also set up voting for a new secretary at this month’s meeting.

The CAB meeting starts at 7 p.m. and is held in the community center at the Lazy 5 Regional Park. Lazy 5 is located at 7100 Pyramid Highway.
