In Game 1, the Huskies and Raiders battled back and forth through the first few points, but Reno then scored six straight to lead 8-3 and pull away from Reed. The Raiders (17-21, 6-5 High Desert League) rallied back to trail 14-11. A spike from Jaclyn Winkel started another spree for Reno as it closed the first game on an 11-4 run.
Game 2 provided a see-saw event between the two teams tying every point until 4-4 before Reno took a 10-5 lead. The HDL champs concluded the game with an ace by Samantha O’Connell for the 25-14 win.
Reno made very few mistakes throughout the night and was able to capitalize on Reed’s miscues.
Reed coach Kristen Flagtvedt blamed the Raiders’ difficulties on bad serve receiving and passing.
“We didn’t handle their serves well,” Flagtvedt said. “We weren’t making adjustments … I think we were over-correcting.”
The Raiders’ fortunes didn’t improve much in Game 3. Reno jumped out to a 16-2 lead over the Sparks squad, which couldn’t force Reno into many mistakes.
Reed’s Chelsea Cohen smashed in a spike to cut the lead to 18-6. Reed’s Jackie Lee and Ciarra Loli bumped into each other at the net trying to return a serve for Reno ’s 22-8 lead. Lee left the game with an injury and did not return. Reno got the 25-11 final margin and the perfect 12-0 regular season. The Huskies sit 23-6 overall record.
Reno plays against Yerington in a non-league match at home today.
Reed was led by Chelsea Cohen who had 1 kill, 8 digs and 1 ace. Rachael Vaughn chipped in with 6 digs, 1 ace and 5 assists.
The Raiders conclude league play Thursday when they host North Valleys.
