A 25-13, 25-11, 25-23 High Desert League road win at North Valleys Thursday ensured Spanish Springs of that.
The Cougars improved to 22-13 overall and 6-5 in HDL affairs. Spanish Springs has just one league match left, Tuesday at home against second-place McQueen at 6 p.m. A victory clinches a Spanish Springs berth to the upcoming Northern 4A tournament.
A loss Tuesday to the Lancers would leave Spanish Springs needing Elko to lose its final three matches of the regular season. Elko plays league-leading Reno but also Hug and North Valleys, the bottom two teams in the HDL.
"If we win, we're in. That's all you can ask for, a chance to control your own destiny," Spanish Springs first-year coach Frank Sandomenico said. "This is the first time for Spanish Springs our last match of the league season has been meaningful. That part is exciting. If we show up and play well, we have chance."
On Thursday, Spanish Springs senior Danielle Beebe turned in a solid all-around effort. She gave away 14 assists, put down 12 kills and served up 4 aces.
Kristen Ripa gave away 12 assists and got up 4 digs for the Cougars. Ashley Collier and Bryli Friberg chipped in 5 kills apiece for the SSHS spikers.
"We were OK tonight," Sandomenico said. "It's hard to find that happy medium. We either have fun but with no focus or we're miserable. It's hard to find that balance."
