The Spanish Springs Cal Ripken All-Stars improved to 2-0 in pool play Friday at the 11-year-old, 70 feet Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament in Fallon.

Spanish Springs knocked off tourney host Fallon 6-4 to set up today’s tilt for the pool championship. Spanish Springs will meet Highland, Utah at 4 p.m. at Fallon’s Oats Park to decide the pool’s top seed. Spanish Springs and Highland have both already clinched berths into single-elimination championship bracket play that starts Sunday.

Spanish Springs, which drummed Silver State, 17-6 Thursday in its pool opener, got on the scoreboard first Friday, posting a single score in the bottom of the first inning. Fallon took control of the contest with all four its runs in the top of the second.

Spanish Springs trimmed the margin to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the third inning. Dalton O’Connell walked and circled the sacks after a pair of stolen bases and an RBI single by Carson McCusker. A Duncan Wilmot single later in the inning plated McCusker.

Neither team scored in the fourth and Fallon was still clinging to a slim one-run edge, 4-3, when the Sparks squad took its turn in the fifth. That’s when Spanish Springs stole the momentum, thanks to a three-run outburst.

Zach Tanner led off the Spanish Springs fifth with a single and O’Connell followed with another single. Tanner came home on an RBI groundout by McCusker. Parker Kittilsen then laced a single that scored O’Connell and gave Spanish Springs the lead. Kittilsen capped the inning’s scoring after he stole second and came plateward on a Fallon error.

Kittilsen picked up the pitching victory by working five and 1-3 innings. He scattered 11 Fallon hits in the one-strikeout, two-walk performance. Duncan Wilmot recorded the final two outs for the save.
