Spanish Springs, though greatly improved this season, fell in four games to Reno 25-17, 25-8, 17-25, 25-7.
Spanish Springs coach Frank Sandomenico and his squad seemed frustrated throughout the match but the Cougars can at least look at the bright side.
“I don't know if we've ever won a single game against them so it's a positive thing,” Sandomenico said. “I don't know if in our history we've ever beaten McQueen in a game, again so it's positive that we've been able to take one of those, especially being down 0-2. It shows we have glimpses. We're just not good enough to miss serves and to not pass.”
In Game 3 Spanish Springs dominated the court and kept the Huskies at bay in a 25-17 win. The Cougars were on target passing and got up great serving in what may have been the best single game the Cougars have played all season.
Spanish Springs (20-11, 4-3 High Desert League) scored nine straight points with senior Danielle Beebe serving. She tallied 6 aces on the night. The Huskies didn't shy away from the Cougars' big lead and kept their composure. Reno pulled within four, 13-9, but that's as close as they could get in the Cougars' third game win. The SSHS spikers later went on a 5-1 run to extend their lead and eventually close out the game, 25-17.
“Our serve percentage was 100,” Sandomenico said. “We didn't miss a single serve that game and that gives us a chance. Passing was better and Reno is a team if they get momentum then they're really good. We got rid of their momentum by getting our serves in and making our passes.”
Reno (16-3, 8-0 HDL) fared much better in the other three games of the match. The Huskies capitalized on a bevy of Spanish Springs errors as they held their hosts to fewer than 10 points in Game 2 and Game 4.
“I think our focus was on what we could do, keeping the ball in play and letting them (Spanish Springs) make mistakes,” Reno coach Adrian Hankoff said. “It's a lot easier to focus on what we do instead of focusing on what they're doing and letting them get the points.”
Beebe led the way for Spanish Springs with her 6 aces, 2 digs, 11 assists and 3 kills.
Reno's Lauren Bradley had 3 aces and 24 assists to help her squad to its eighth win in league play.
Spanish Springs plays Tuesday at Hug at 6 p.m.
