Spanish Springs came into Monday's championship series as the undefeated team and had to lose twice to miss out on a trip to regionals later in the month. Fallon made sure Spanish Springs did just that.
“It's disappointing,” Spanish Springs coach Dale Henson said. "We were the No. 1 seed coming into the final game and they had to beat us twice."
In the first game of the day, Spanish Springs and Fallon battled through a close game but Fallon came up with the 3-2 win.
Fallon took the early lead, scoring one in the second inning. Shon Plamondon walked for Fallon and scored on an error.
Spanish Springs rallied for two in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Trent Stowe doubled for Spanish Springs and scored a single by Connor Brewster. Sam Jacobus singled and scored on a Josh Heward groundout for the one-run edge.
In the bottom of the fifth, Fallon got things rolling. Dillon Jabines singled and Spanish Springs gave up walks to Sage Morin and Ali Tedford to load up the bases for Fallon. The next batter, David Hughes, also walked, sending in Jabines to tie things up.
Morin scored when Dalton Frank singled him in for the final 3-2 win. The victory left Spanish Springs with its first loss of the tournament and set up another game between the two teams.
Immediately, things went wrong for Spanish Springs and they did not improve much.
Lane Boyle hit a grand slam home run to kick off the first inning for Fallon.
Sam Jacobus got a run across for Spanish Springs in the second inning when he singled and stole home, leaving Fallon still leading 4-1.
In the bottom of the same frame, Morin was hit by a pitch to get on base for Fallon. Hughes stepped up and blasted a two-run homer, giving the Churchill County team a 6-1 lead.
“They hit the ball. We didn't,” Henson said. “That's what it came down to. You hit the ball, you win.”
In the top of the fourth, Spanish Springs cut the lead in half with a two-run inning. Stowe and Nick Galletti hit back-to-back singles to get on base. Stowe scored on a passed ball. Galletti scored on a Brewster groundout to first, trimming the lead to 6-3.
That was as close as Spanish Springs could get in the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kyle Evans singled and scored on a Hughes single to push the lead to 7-3 for Fallon.
Fallon added six more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early, putting the 10-run mercy rule into effect.
Boyle hit a solo home run, his second smash of the night, for an 8-3 lead. Jabines followed suit with a solo shot of his own. Evans reached on an error. Morin was hit by a pitch and Tedford singled to load up the bases for Hughes.
Evans and Morin both reached scored when Hughes reached on a fielder's choice. Tedford and Hughes scored a Joe Pyle double, ending the game 13-3.
