When do vows and the word ‘no’ mean anything in politics?

Two good old boys from Nevada have been suffering from a lack of zipper control. Will there be more?

Sen. John Ensign confirmed that the old adage “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” is bogus when he confirmed that he had an affair with one of his campaign workers. Ensign’s lover was also on his campaign payroll along with her husband. Ensign came forward with all the details when he was threatened with blackmail over the affair. The woman and her husband were making pretty good money when Ensign was paying them. Somebody’s services obviously met with someone’s approval.

Gov. Jim Gibbons previously was accused of shining around two different women as well. With all the fooling around of late, can this mean there is a whole new meaning to the Governor’s Ball?

Both of these men have taken vows, oaths and whatever, but they still know discretion is the better part of valor. Then again, I don’t think any of us know what to believe anymore.

We know that Gibbons, excuse me, Gov. Gibbons, we do have to be polite, you know, does know the meaning of the word “no” as he proved so eloquently on the steps of our state’s Capitol building as he vetoed with great relish all those bills that the Legislature had worked so hard to pass. The lawmakers wisely overrode his vetoes anyway in the end, saving the fruits of their own labor.

However, Gibbons apparently doesn’t remember the meaning of “no” after hours.

Gibbons, I mean, Gov. Gibbons, (I’ve still got to be more polite, he is the governor, you know) found out he can’t use his veto power on the almost-former First Lady Dawn Gibbons as she still calls the Governor’s Mansion her house - even though the pair are on the marital outs with each other.

I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the major television networks doesn’t pick up on the plot of a new soap opera that would follow, loosely, of course, the exploits of our two esteemed politicians. You couldn’t hire someone to duplicate this plot if you tried.

Maybe these two characters could eventually bow out of politics in a face-saving move. They could hire on with the federal government the next time the feds take over a house of ill repute like they did with the Mustang Ranch. The feds ran it for a time before they were able to get some other bunch of pimps to run it. These two characters could take turns counting towels and managing the books until a suitable buyer could be located. There would be no vows or oaths to take at all to be able to do a crack-up job of operating that establishment.

Apparently, there has been some interesting chemistry permeating our state politicos of late as all this mess has stirred Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman to consider a run for the job as Nevada ’s governor. I wonder why he wants a piece of the action. Is it that stimulating or what? I know public service is supposed to be rewarding, guys, but is a really good veto worth all of this?

It almost makes you want to have a good run for office before breakfast every morning, doesn’t it?
