At around 6:45 p.m. Sunday evening, the Sparks Police Department was dispatched to a home in Wingfield Springs because of a reported

domestic disturbance involving weapons.

The domestic violence was between a husband and wife and as Sparks police were responding to the call, they were informed by the female victim that her husband had handguns and a rifle and was loading them.

After receiving that information, several more police officers

responded.

When the police arrived on the scene, the female was unable to respond to officers because she was fearful. She had suffered facial injuries that substantiated the fact that she had been assaulted. Once on site, the female told officers that the male suspect was an ex-Vietnam veteran who was acting irrationally and had with him an assault rifle. Officers were able to extract her and take her to a safe location.

Based on the potential threats to the community and officers, the Sparks Police Special Weapons and Tactics team was deployed. The SWAT team is deployed with the primary emphasis of resolving

potentially violent or hostile situations peacefully. Once the SWAT

team arrived on scene and containment of the male suspect’s house was established, negotiators contacted the male inside his home. Shortly thereafter, the suspect left the house peacefully and was detained without further incident.
