Become a certified lifeguard through the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department's American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program. A special session will be held June 8 - 11, to help local facilities in their hiring efforts. The class meets 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Alf Sorensen Community Center, 1400 Baring Blvd.

Candidates must pass a swim performance test prior to acceptance into the class. Students who complete the course will receive Lifeguard, First Aid certificates valid for three years, and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate valid for one year.

The cost for the program is $174 ($145 for Sparks' residents). The registration fee includes instruction, course materials, and an administration fee. Financial assistance is available for youth who cannot otherwise participate in the program due to financial limitations.
