After a long weekend, the Sparks City Council is facing a short agenda today.

Due to the Memorial Day holiday, the council took a break from its regularly scheduled meeting Monday and postponed the meeting until today at 3 p.m.

Items on today’s agenda include interviews for several public service commissions, a presentation on home valuations in the city and the possible acceptance of a police department grant that would mean a new way for area residents to report crimes.

The E.L. Cord Foundation has offered a $15,000 grant that, if accepted, would buy CopLogic software for the Sparks Police Department. The software would, according to department spokesman Rocky Triplett, provide a way for residents to file police reports over the Internet.

According to staff reports, the desk officer at the police department would spend less time transcribing reports if the new software were implemented. It would also be available to residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The council will also consider the acceptance of two donations that would keep the city’s Junior Giants baseball program going.

Part of the $2,000 donation from both the Nevada Amateur Softball Association and the Sertoma Club of Sparks will go toward the baseball program. According to staff reports, about 95 percent of the program’s participants come from lower-income areas of the city.

In other business, the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board of Trustees, the city’s Civil Service Commission and the Parks and Recreation Commission will all have vacancies come June as several members reach their term limits.

Both city commissions have two vacancies each and the Airport Authority board has one vacancy. Although the applicants will be interviewed today, the mayor will not announce appointments until the June 8 city council meeting, staff reports said.

No staff materials were provided on the home assessment presentation.

Following the council meeting, the city’s redevelopment agency will meet and discuss demolition of a building in Victorian Square.

The Pacific Pawnbrokers building on Victorian Square near Dotty’s Casino was purchased by the city in 2008. According to redevelopment officials, the city is planning to demolish the building to make way for a new road.

The building, according to staff reports, has been cleared of asbestos and is ready for demolition. The agency will discuss awarding the bid to Olcese Construction for $63,300.

Officials estimate that the demolition will start on June 1 and be completed by June 30.
