Funding will be a key issue at today’s meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Washoe County School District as board members hear about the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and how it will help stimulate funds for education.

Kristen McNeill, director of state and federal programs, and others will present draft plans on how the ARRA funds will help the district quickly spend funds to save and create new positions in the district, ensure accountability and transparency and help improve student achievement.

ARRA also will enable the district to apply for other grants, but McNeill said this is not done through the U.S. Department of Education.

“It’s just draft plans,” she said. “Nothing’s been set in stone.”

However, Title I schools would receive a $75 increase in per pupil allocation, which would provide some help as more Washoe County schools are qualifying for aid that covers free and reduced lunches and other needs.

“Right now we’re at $500, so that would go up to $575,” she said.

Other items at today’s school board meeting:

• The board will receive a check from NV Energy in excess of $53,000 for energy saving retrofit projects the district performed on certain schools, such as lighting systems, control improvements and motion detectors at Galena High School.

• Discussion and action on the use of bond rollover funds to upgrade computer labs that use software called Plato at all middle and high schools and to add a lab at larger high schools to create equity in technology use among students. According to a staff report, two recent evaluations by district employees found that more than 400 computers and some tables and chairs did not meet district standards as use of the computer labs were was increasing.
