Some education funding restored

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers have voted to restore nearly 40 percent of the cuts proposed by Gov. Jim Gibbons for K-12 education, which accounts for more than a third of the state's entire budget.

The Senate-Assembly budget subcommittee voted to reduce education salaries by 4 percent, rather than 6 percent suggested by the governor. The panel also voted to restore merit pay and incentives to teachers, but agreed with the governor's recommendation to do away with teacher signing bonuses.

In total, the governor suggested about $690 million in cuts to K-12 education funding and the legislators have voted to restore about $270 million of those reductions.
