The Reno Huskies picked a good night to host their homecoming.

In fact the Reno Huskies picked a good night to do nearly everything right, on their way to a 35-6 rout of the formerly undefeated Spanish Springs Cougars.

"We didn't start out well," Spanish Springs coach Scott Hare said. "We lined up wrong in our first couple possessions. Obviously we turned the ball over. We put ourselves in a 14 nothing hole and were trying to work ourselves out of it. Not a lot went right tonight."

Unless you were cheering for the home team.

Reno (2-3, 1-0 HDL) started off strong from the first whistle, forcing the Spanish Springs offense into a three-and-out. Reno started its first scoring drive on the Cougars' 28-yard line and was able to capitalize, with a touchdown by David Jamieson with seven minutes and eight seconds left in the first quarter.

Spanish Springs (4-1, 0-1 HDL) fumbled the ball on the second play of it's next possession allowing the Huskies to have good field position again, 27 yards away from the end zone. Nicholas Bietz held the ball on a quarterback keeper and scored a touchdown on the fifth play of the possesion, with four and a half minutes left in the quarter.

The Huskies' offense didn't let up and managed a third touchdown with only 26 seconds left in the half on a pass from Bietz to Trevor McElroy for the score.

The closest Spanish Springs came to the Huskies' end zone was on defense. SSHS only earned one first down in the entire first half and trailed 21-0 after two full quarters of play.

"Reno was well prepared," Hare said. "They had a really good game plan and we didn't really adapt to it as the game went on. It's just something we need to continue to get better at. It was a combination of Reno having a really good game plan and us just not really stepping up to the challenge like we needed to."

Reno continued to pound away at the Cougars' defense in the second half. Cruise McClure made a 13-yard run to increase Reno's lead to four touchdowns halfway into the third.

The Cougars finally made it onto the scoreboard with just under five minutes to go in thee game. The Cougars recovered a fumble on the Huskies' 36-yard line, putting them in good field position to utilize a rush-offense.

Jalen Dixon rushed for 8 yards, followed by a 13 yard carry Todd Giordano to pick up a first down for the Cougs. On first and goal, Dominic Smith pushed through the Huskies' defense to get the Sparks' schools first and only score of the night. Brandon Pelfrey missed the extra point opportunity for the Cougars, making the score 28-6.

Reno added on more score on the night with 2:12 showing on the clock on an 11- yard run by Michael Utley for the 35-6 victory.

"I think that a lot of things that we do are sound. We just made a lot of mistakes," Hare said. "The way we lined up, the way we made our blocks. We just need to continue to develop and grow."

Spanish Springs has the next week to prepare for Friday when it hosts Hug High School.
