The hard times continue for the Sparks boys basketball team. The Railroaders dropped their fifth game of the year by seven or fewer points Saturday afternoon. This latest defeat may have been the toughest as Sparks was handed a 43-42 road loss at Fernley in a DI-A North conference clash.

Fernley took control early, leading 9-6 after the first quarter and 23-15 at the half. The visiting SHS crew outscored its hosts 16-11 in the third period to trim the Vaqueros' lead to 34-31. Sparks also outscored Fernley in the final period, 11-9, but it could not steal the road win.

The loss leaves Sparks sitting at 1-10 overall and 1-3 in league tilts.

Isaiah Campbell finished with 12 points and Kevin Borja chipped in 11 to lead Sparks in defeat. Dominic Ceresola and Johnny Corbin finished with 16 and 12 points respectively for the Vaqueros (6-4, 2-2).

Shooting woes once again hurt Sparks. The Railroaders connected on just 17-of-50 (34 percent) field-goal tries, including only 3-of-21 (14 percent) from 3-point land.

In the girls' meeting, Fernley breezed to a 51-35 romp. Fernley blew out to a 46-19 lead after three periods and was never threatened.

Sparks (1-8, 1-4) did outscore Fernley (5-6, 4-2) 16-5 in the final quarter to make the score look a bit more respectable.

Fernley junior Lynsee Ferretto poured in 26 points to lead all scorers.
