The victory came in the championship game of Napa High School's Wine Valley Classic. It was the Cougars' second overtime game in the tourney. The local school lost to Vintage in its tournament opener Thursday before bouncing Buchanon Friday night.
Spanish Springs trailed 49-47 with eight seconds left in regulation Saturday. Cougars coach Kyle Penney drew up a set play and his team cashed in, getting senior guard Kenny Meyer a driving layup just before the final whistle sounded.
The teams went to OT deadlocked at 49s and Spanish Springs was the better team in the extra session, outscoring it's California opponent 12-2 over the four-minute period. The SSHS defense forced two turnovers on Foothill's initial possessions over overtime. The Cougars also got 3-pointers from Garrett Nauman and Jake Longero to help their cause in overtime.
The contest was close throughout. Foothill led by two after the first quarter but trailed by two at the half. Spanish Springs held a 42-37 lead after three quarters setting the stage for the late game-tying sequence.
Meyer had a solid night, scoring 21 points while dishing out eight assists and grabbing five steals. Dupree Kness added 16 and Jake Longero chipped in 10 points to the SSHS crew's winning cause.
The Cougars (2-2) will be back in the Truckee Meadows Tuesday when they host Wooster in a D1 North crossover league game at 7 p.m.
