The Spanish Springs boys basketball (1-2) picked up its first win of the season Friday afternoon, topping Buchanon (Clovis, Calif.), 60-48, in the Napa Wine Classic.

“It’s good,” Spanish Springs coach Kyle Penney said of getting into the win column. “It’s good for our kids. We’ve played two really tough games already and today was a tough game as well with some matchup issues for us, so we played really well.”

Jake Longero led the Cougars with 17 points and Kenny Meyer dumped in 16 points of his own.

The Cougs jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter and was not outscored in a quarter until the fourth, when they were outscored 20-13.

“Tonight we got off to a good start and were able to sustain it,” Penney said. “I mean we played a full game.”

Penney said his squad struggled with free throws, missing the front end of one-and-ones and turned the ball over amongst heavy pressure allowing Buchanon to trim the deficit. Spanish Springs finished 8-of-12 from the charity stripe.

The win came on the heels of Spanish Springs’ 51-43 loss to Vintage where the Purple had a tough time finding the bottom of the net.

“Last night for whatever reason, we just couldn’t get the ball in the bucket…” Penney said. “Tonight we made shots and still managed to be good defensively and we were better with pressure tonight and we made buckets. It was a good game for us.”

Spanish Springs plays the winner of Friday night’s Foothill-Bethel game Saturday. Tip-off is at noon.

The Cougs girls basketball team improved to 2-1 with a 43-34 win over Union Mine in the High Sierra Winter Challenge hosted by Spanish Springs High.

Mariah Vargas led the Cougars with 12 points. Katrina Prendergast chipped in seven.
