Bringing some spice to Sparks

A 70-hour work week might seem a little out of the ordinary for some, but not for Luz Heaivilin. Heaivilin has been in the restaurant business her whole life. Her family owns a restaurant down in Jalisco, Mexico where she was born.

While living in Jalisco, Heaivilin met the love of her life and they decided to move to Sparks, about 24 years ago. Her husband, Michael Heaivilin has also been in the restaurant business his whole life. His family owned a restaurant called Chelos that resided back in the Midwest.

“Being in the restaurant business is kind of second hand to me,” Luz Heaivilin said.

Heaivilin and her husband are co-managers of Jazz a Louisiana Kitchen located here in Sparks. It is a full-time job and requires a lot hard work.

“We split up our jobs, I run the restaurant while he handles the marketing side of things,” Luz Heaivilin said.

She has been the manager of Jazz for two and a half years now and loves it. She said that meeting new people every day and seeing satisfied customers is what makes her job worthwhile. When Heaivilin isn’t working, she likes to relax, and do some of the things that she loves.

“I like going hiking on the weekends, off-roading, and camping,” she said.

Heaivilin doesn’t just work side by side with her husband. Her daughter Courtney helps them run the restaurant as well.

“Since I work about 70 hours a week, it’s nice having my daughter here so we can spend more time together,” said Heaivilin.

Being a full-time manager of a restaurant isn’t all fun and games. The hardest part for Heaivilin is keeping customers and employees happy.

“My customers and employees are my first priority, I make sure they are happy and that makes for a successful business,” said Heaivilin.

A family that works together stays together. Whenever Heaivilin feels the pressure of running a business, her husband is a phone call away for moral support.

For those in the mood for a little Cajon Creole, they can come in to Jazz and experience something different.

“Jazz gives you a little taste of the south without being there. The New Orleans feel of the restaurant is what makes nothing in Reno like us,” Heaivilin said.

Jazz a Louisiana Kitchen is located at 1180 Scheels Dr. Sparks right next to Scheels at the Legends. Luz Heaivilin says she'll give you a great Cajun experience.
