Reed and Spanish Springs, along with Elko, look to be the favorites to win an HDL crown. Reed’s win Tuesday night, coupled with its win over Elko 10 days ago has the Raiders in the driver’s seat.
The RHS squad improved to 3-0-1 in HDL matches. The Raiders are 3-1-2 overall.
Despite the key win, Reed coach Jason Saville wasn’t counting any unhatched chickens just yet.
“Whoever won this match was going to have an advantage, but no matter who won, there’s still a lot of season left,” he said. “This race is not over. Spanish Springs is a good team. They fight hard. They’re quick and they’re more physical than they have been.
“Our Reed girls get to enjoy this until midnight Wednesday. Then it will be time to take care of business. This is going to be a battle to the end.”
Reed grabbed a 1-0 edge over Spanish Springs Tuesday night when Raiders junior Kelsey Gomer took an assist from Alissa Marshall and scored in the 16th minute.
The Raiders got an insurance goal in the 63rd minute when Kelsey Gomer fed her senior sister Kayla for a goal.
Carrington Grimes turned in a stellar effort in goal for Reed, finishing with the shutout and 10 saves.
“I thought we passed the ball and possessed the ball well. We definitely defended well,” Saville said. “I have to give credit to our back line and Carrington. She made some great saves.”
Spanish Springs (6-3-1, 3-2 HDL) was shutout for the second straight match. Elko beat the Cougars on their home field, 2-0, last weekend. Spanish Springs coach Mike Faker knows his team needs to regain an offensive edge to get back on track.
“This is the second match in a row that I feel like we had more opportunities than our opponent and we didn’t put one in,” Faker said. “The last two times out we have not been able to finish. We’ve been working on that more, but obviously not enough.”
Reed returns to the soccer pitch Saturday for a conference clash at home against Reno. First kick is set for 1 p.m. Spanish Springs gets the weekend off but plays McQueen Tuesday.
