After settling for a frustrating 2-2 tie at Galena Wednesday, the Cougars did not respond with an outbreak performance Saturday at Reno. But the response was enough to land Spanish Springs a 1-0 High Desert League win on a windy afternoon.

“It was an ugly win but I’d rather have an ugly win than a pretty loss,” Spanish Springs coach Rob Moreland said. “It was a battle.”

Jesus Gonzalez scored the lone goal of the match in the 12th minute on one of the Cougars’ 12 shots compared the Huskies’ two.

It was the third straight game the Cougars were unable to find the net in the second half but Moreland isn’t worried: Yet.

“I don’t think (it’s a big deal). Not yet. We are creating a lot of chances. We've just got to finish.”

Offensive struggles aside, the Cougars’ defense continues to be stout. The 1-0 win was the Cougars’ second shutout in three matches.

“The defense is still playing strong and keeping Omar (Trujillo, goalie) bored back there,” Moreland said.

The Cougars (10-0-2) return to action Wednesday at home against Carson.

On the girls side, the SSHS squad suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday at Galena and is now riding a two-game losing streak after falling 3-1 at Reno Saturday.

Spanish Springs (6-2-3) outshot Reno 12-9 but was kept off the scoreboard until Sam Ryckebosch’s 70th-minute tally. The Huskies scored their goals in the second, 20th and 30th minutes.

The Cougars will attempt to snap their first skid of the season, Tuesday, at home against Carson.
