Spanish Springs dropped Damonte Ranch on the road 3-0 to remain undefeated at 7-0-1.
Jonathan Garcia put the Cougars on the scoreboard in the sixth minute off an assist from Marshall Andrews. Andrews cut out the middleman two minute after halftime, putting the Cougars up 2-0. Ricardo Camacho put the game out of reach in the 55th minute off an assist from Victor Garcia.
“I was pleased with everybody,” coach Rob Moreland said. “We played well as a team and that’s what I’m looking for. The defense played strong.”
Moreland said that like a number of the teams in the High Desert League, Damonte Ranch was limited by short bench and his Cougar’s wore the shorthanded Mustangs down in the second half.
The Cougars were suffocating on defense allowing three Damonte Ranch shots.
“Omar (Trujillo, goalie) was bored so I like that,” Moreland said.
The Cougars host their cross-town rival, Reed, Wednesday.
“(We) always look forward to Reed,” Moreland said. “Always.”
The girls also remained undefeated Saturday at Damonte Ranch but not in the fashion Cougars fans have become accustomed to in 2013.
The Cougars could not to take advantage of a number of one-on-one opportunities and were stuck with a 0-0 draw. Spanish Springs now sits at 6-0-2 after the 9 a.m. start.
“We moved the ball well early for parts of the game but didn’t put it away,” assistant coach Ryan Long said. “We had a lot of opportunites and the ball didn’t fall where it needed to fall.”
Domante Ranch has a turf field and is hosting the regional tournament this year. Saturday was the Cougar’s first time on the synthetic surface this year and Long the girls will “definitely have to adjust to the speed of the ball.”
Long said he is not distraught over the tie and believes the team played well enough to “come out on a high.”
Spanish Springs hosts Reed (4-1-2) Wednesday in a meeting that figures to have High Desert League title implications.
“Both teams always come out and play strong against each other,” Long said. “A lot of the girls play together in club. It’s a lot of good friends playing against each other.”
