Karen Gale was arrested Wednesday evening for a felony warrant with the Drug Enforcement Agency after a near three-hour standoff with multiple police agencies on Sullivan Lane in Sparks.

Several Sparks streets were closed as Sparks Police, Washoe County Sheriff's, Washoe County School District and SWAT officers responded to the scene where Gale locked herself inside a trailer threatening to hurt herself. Lieutenant Peter Petzing, of Washoe County Sheriff's Office, said no forced entry was necessary by police officers as a negotiation team was able to deliver a communication device to the trailer and convince Gale to emerge peacefully after about 45 minutes.

"SWAT was there as a contingency plan if the circumstances were to change, but we did not want her to hurt herself," Petzing said. "They got her out and resolved it peacefully and no one was injured. That was all that mattered."

Police were able to re-open the roads at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, which included Wedekind Road, Byrd Drive and Sullivan Lane near Sparks Middle School. Petzing said the collaboration and teamwork of all agencies involved kept patrons and officers safe throughout the negotiation.

"With Sparks PD and School Police on scene we were able to get containment for any passers by to remain safe," he said. "We also did not want her to flee on foot. We were able to talk to one another through primary channels since the jurisdiction in that area varies for Washoe County and for Sparks PD. That communication is just one tool that allowed us to end this matter peacefully."
