When is a coup not a coup

The current events in Egypt have created the opportunity for the Obama administration to once again manufacture new language. According to many of the commentators, there was a definite coup d’etat in Egypt. Wikipedia defines a coup d’etat, also known as a coup, a putsch, or an overthrow, as the sudden deposition of a government, usually by a small group of the existing state establishment — typically the military — to depose the existing government and replace it with another body, civil or military. A coup d’état is considered successful when the usurpers establish their dominance. When the coup neither fails completely nor succeeds, a civil war is a likely consequence.

Apparently, when such an event occurs it is necessary for the United States to withhold any monies going to the country in which it happens. So far, the Obama administration has declined to recognize the coup that occurred in Egypt. Whatever they choose to call it in their ongoing redefinition of actual phraseology, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

In the past, the administration has had little trouble creating new jargon such as “overseas contingency operation” rather than using the time-worn phrase of “war on terror,” “manmade disaster” for “terrorist attack” and “workplace violence” for the infamous shooting at Fort Hood.

Referring to the Fort Hood incident which occurred some four years ago, I was surprised to learn that the accused perpetrator has received his monthly Army pay while awaiting trial. Since Attorney General Eric Holder has refused to label the Fort Hood incident a “terror attack,” we cannot identify the shooter as an enemy combatant – which I’m sure he is. To further make this point in his own words, the shooter has stated that he was killing his victims to prevent them from killing the enemy overseas. If disposing of American troops, in order to further their enemies’ actions, is not the act of an enemy combatant, what else could it be?

Our only consolation is that the trial will be handled by a military court, rather than a civilian circus.

That being said, we now have the possibility that the long-simmering Benghazi incident may get a fresh hearing. It is sure to be reviewed in the confirmation hearings currently underway for former State Department Spokeswomen Victoria Nuland. She is being proposed for the position of Assistant Secretary of State. According to the documents that have so far been released, she played an integral part in the creation of the anti-Muslim video scenario.

As was the case with another prevaricator, Susan Rice, Ms. Nuland is being considered for elevation to a much higher position.

It would seem that the path for moving up in the Obama administration is strict adherence to whatever fictional tale is created.

In the meantime, we are still awaiting Vice President Joe Biden’s comments on the many scandals now swirling about the White House.
