During a short one-hour meeting Wednesday night, the Spanish Spring Citizen Advisory Board received updated information on the Spanish Springs flood control project, including information about a map revision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Kimble Corbridge, floodplain manager for Washoe County, filled in for Jeanne Ruefer, who was slated to give the presentation.

“Residents who lived in the floodplain will want to get a copy of this letter and take it to their insurance provider to hopefully lower their rates,” Corbridge said.

Corbridge explained that FEMA has redrawn the flood control project’s map, removing a number of houses in the Eagle Canyon neighborhood from the floodplain. He added that his understanding was that, because of the map revision, some flood insurance premiums would go down effective May 1, but that residents needed to contact their insurance provider for details.

Corbridge said the new map is based on a 100-year flood plan, which means that the area has a 1 percent chance of flooding. He said that while that number might seems small, Washoe County still encourages residents to have flood insurance.

Some residents at the meeting questioned Corbridge about the effectiveness of predicting a flood and what would happen if a flood did affect homes that were removed from the floodplain with the map revision as well as homes within the floodplain.

Corbridge said that if a homeowner carries flood insurance and a flood damages their home, the resident is able to submit a claim to FEMA to help with the damage.

Also at the CAB’s monthly meeting, Washoe County Community Outreach Coordinator Lorrie Adams said the Lockwood landfill would be open for free dumping April 20-25 and April 27-29 in honor of Earth Day.

Bringing the community updates to a close, board member Max Bartness said the rummage sale last Saturday raised more than $500, which was donated to Blue Star Moms. The money will go to troops serving time overseas.

The next CAB meeting will be May 13 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the community center at Lazy 5 Regional Park at 1700 Pyramid Highway.
