RENO — The 14th annual observance of National Women’s Health Week kicked off on Mother’s Day and is celebrated through Saturday. With the theme, “It’s Your Time,” National Women’s Health Week 2013 encourages women to make their health a top priority, and take simple steps for longer, healthier, and happier lives.

During National Women’s Health Week, women are encouraged to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases by getting regular checkups and preventive screenings, getting active and eating healthy.

“A woman’s own health and well-being may become secondary when she puts the needs of her spouse, partner, children, or parents before her own,” said Washoe County Interim District Health Officer Kevin Dick. “And, because it takes a lot of work to be a caregiver, it’s important that we support the important women we know and help them take steps for longer, healthier, and happier lives,” Dick added.

The National Women’s Health Week observance is celebrated across America in communities, neighborhoods, towns, cities, counties, hospitals, health centers, businesses, schools, places of worship, recreation centers and online. Anyone who wants to promote women’s health or participate by making healthy choices for themselves can celebrate.
