Since January 2007, the Sparks Fire Department has offered residents its Project Survive A Fire Emergency (SAFE) campaign, which provides vital information about smoke detectors. With the assistance of a FEMA Grant and volunteers from local businesses in 2010, 2011 and 2012, Sparks Fire Department personnel have installed more than 2,000 smoke alarms; 366 carbon monoxide detectors; and 40 hearing impaired devices in 743 homes. Fire department personnel have also educated 1,932 adults and children about fire safety in the home. Our goal for 2013 is to reach the 1,000 home mark by December, said Bob King, City of Sparks Fire Marshal.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that, “74 percent of fatal fires occur in homes without working smoke detectors." It also reports that, “all detectors should be replaced once every 10 years because they often fail by their tenth year." A local survey displayed that most people don’t test their smoke alarms or replace batteries yearly, so many homes aren’t protected even when smoke detectors are present, King said.
