On Thursday (5/2), at approximately 8:17 p.m., Sparks police officers responded to Sparks Middle School at 2275 18th St on a report of a robbery. Once on scene, officers met with the victim a 12-year-old male juvenile. The victim told officers that he had been riding his bike behind the school when he was confronted by several subjects. The victim attempted to flee but was punched in the the back of the head by one of the suspects and knocked to the ground. The suspects then took the victim's cell phone, necklace and bike and fled the area.

Officers searched the area and located several witnesses who provided information on where the suspects had possibly gone. Officers located a 17-year-old Hispanic male (HMJ), matching the description given by the victim in a nearby apartment complex. The HMJ was found to be in possession of some of the victim's property and was taken in to custody. Officers also located suspect Julian Padilla at his residence in Sparks, and while taking him into custody, he attempted to pull an officer's handgun out of its holster. Officers were able to secure Padilla and he was taken into custody.

It was determined that both suspects in this case were documented gang members and both were charged with Robbery with Gang Enhancement. Padilla was also charged with obstructing and was booked into the Washoe County Jail.  The 17-year-old HMJ was also charged with a probation violation and was booked into Jan Evans Juvenile Detention Juvenile Detention Center.

The Sparks Police Department and the Regional Gang Unit are continuing to  investigate this case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sparks Police Department at 353-2231 or Secret Witness at 322-4900 (www.secretwitness.com).
