After listening to more than an hour of staff report and hearing more than 140 names opposing the Lazy 8 casino, the Sparks Planning Commission on Thursday night voted against amending the city’s master plan.

The commission voted 4-2 to deny the land-use amendment that would have changed more than 20 acres north of the Lazy 5 Regional Park from general commercial use to tourist commercial use, which would have allowed the Lazy 8 casino to be built.

Commissioners Mitch Nowicki, Scott Barnes, Kendall Mattina and Tom Lean voted to deny the land use amendment. Commissioners Doug Voelz and David Fischer voted to approve the amendment and commissioner Jackie Peterson was absent.

“This is a decision that is going to impact the city of Sparks for 50 years, not just four or five years,” Mattina said. “The long-term impact needs to be looked at as well.”
