Local clothing designers get a bit crazy

Sifting through a box of acid-washed men’s T-shirts and women’s pink boy shorts underwear, Danny and Stacy Johnson can’t stop talking.

“Well, we can put the logo here,” Stacy said.

“And these shirts are just great, they’ll look good on the guys” Danny said, soon after.

“We’re definitely evolving,” Stacy said, before Danny cuts in with, “When it comes to fashion in this town, it’s all about us.”

Hesitating for a moment, local clothing designers and owners of Maniac Clothes, Stacy and Danny pause to see one frantic journalist scribbling away to get all of their rapid thoughts down onto a pad of paper.

“Sorry about that, this is how we work together,” Stacy said with a laugh. “It’s creative chaos. It’s the Maniac way.”

And apparently, the Maniac way is working.

Danny and Stacy, a husband and wife designing duo from Spanish Springs, started up Maniac Clothes more than a year ago, specializing in men’s and women’s casual wear.

And this Friday, at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino, Maniac Clothes will be showing off their new spring line at a fashion show event with music from local country-rock band Clear Blue 22.

“We’re stepping it up,” Stacy said, explaining event proceeds will benefit The Down Syndrome Network of Northern Nevada. “And we’re trying to keep things local, keep them at home.”

Together, the pair is dynamic. Stacy, a longtime professional dancer and hip-hop enthusiast, and Danny, a 35-year veteran of boxing and kickboxing, have an energy that makes them hard to keep up with — an energy that shows in just how quickly Maniac Clothes has taken off.

With a focus on the extreme sports lifestyle featuring everything from a Maniac Surfing collection to a Maniac Motor Cross collection, Maniac Clothes offers an array of T-shirts, shorts, tank tops, dresses and underwear, all with the edgy signature “M” designed by Danny.

“I actually always had Maniac Clothes in mind,” Danny said, explaining that he originally started it as Maniac Management for fighters. “I met Stacy, though, and she liked my designs. Sometimes in life, it takes the right person to push you.”

But why the name Maniac?

“Everyone always said I was crazy when I was growing up,” Danny said with a laugh. “So Maniac just seemed to fit. I’m just fun.”

Friday’s featured spring line, which has the likes of sheer, light-weight hoodies for women and board shorts for men, should be a bit crazy, Danny said, with some Reno Bighorns players and dancers as models.

But unlike other typical fashion show events, attendees don’t have to worry about high-end price tags, Danny and Stacy assured, estimating the price range to be from $20 to $45.

“I wouldn’t charge it if I couldn’t afford it,” Stacy said. “Right now, with the economy slowing down, you can see the worry on people’s faces. This event should be fun with a positive impact on the community. And you don’t need to break the bank.”

All Maniac Clothes are screen printed at Absolute Graphix and Design in Reno, though Danny sees the line expanding well past the state line.

“Within the next couple of years, I think it could be from coast to cost,” Danny said, explaining their clothing has already been featured on MTV’s show “Made” and will be featured in Stephen Baldwin’s new film “Power Play.”

The main point, both Danny and Stacy said, is that they love what they’re doing.

“It’s what I love,” Danny said. “I love being creative. And it’s exciting to see it grow.”

Friday’s event starts 8 p.m. Tickets are $25, which includes two drinks, and can be purchased at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino box office or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
