The Spanish Springs Cougars showed the Hug Hawks a thing or two in their 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon in non-league prep boys soccer action.

"We're growing as a team," SSHS coach Rob Moreland said. "We're getting better every game. That's what our plan is, just to get better. Pass to feet, tight defense and that's what we did today."

The Cougars continued their pattern of quick goals, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of the match with an unassisted goal by freshman forward Alex Garcia.

"I just dribbled it all the way, the goalie came out," Garcia said on the game opening goal.

Hawks head coach Ralph Renteria said his squad didn't play to their full potential against the Cougars.

"We didn't play," he said. "We showed up the last 20 minutes of the game. We made mistakes, they capitalized and scored on us."

Spanish Springs extended its lead with a Garrett Faussett goal on an assist by Francisco Soto in the 21st minute, to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

"I think we defeated ourselves," Renteria said. "Primarily two scores were our mistakes. They capitalized on them and were able to score on them. We have to work on our forwards a little bit more. Spanish Springs was able to capitalize on our mistakes and take the win."

Matt Munley gave the Sparks squad a 3-0 edge in the 53rd minute to nearly seal the deal for the Cougars. His goal came off of a corner kick and he made a second effort off a rebound to get the final goal for SSHS.

Hug eliminated the shutout with a goal with 16 minutes left in the match. Robin Avila crossed the ball to Mario Rosiles who slammed a volley into the back of the net among some Spanish Springs confusion.

SSHS goalkeeper Eder Zomoza said the defense suffered miscommunication, which caused the breakdown to lead to the Hawks' lone goal.

"It helps the morale," Renteria said about his squad escaping a shutout. "It's going to help with the ratings and how we do...we'll just take this as a learning curve."

Spanish Springs plays at North Valleys on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
