RENO — A ceremony was held for the most recent Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) of northern Nevada class of trainees, who graduated on March 20.

Guest speakers Assistant Sheriff Haney with Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and Commander Wiecking with Reno Police Department shared their passion for the TIP program and its value to our community. Graduates then received their official TIP identification and certificates of completion from TIP board members including Lieutenant Lee with Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Cleveland with Sparks Police Department, board president Mike Gach, and members Leslie Marshall and Liz Beadle.

TIP volunteers are an integral part of the emergency response system in Washoe County, assisting emergency responders on scene immediately following a tragedy or traumatic event. Volunteers provide emotional and practical support to families and friends left behind after a natural death, drowning, suicide, vehicle accident or infant death, to name just a few. Prior to graduating, volunteers must complete a 40-hour training academy followed by three-months of field training, a background check and ride-along.

TIP mimics first responder’s protocol in that volunteers are available at the request of emergency responders 365 days a year, 24-hours a day, seven days a week and arrive on scene within 20 minutes of being dispatched. TIP volunteers provide support to emergency responders and help prevent citizens from experiencing a second injury.

Since its local inception in 2009, TIP volunteers have logged an incredible 73,400 hours of service to our community, providing emotional support to more than 2,800 citizens and 2,100 emergency responders on scene.

TIP’s next volunteer training academy starts May 9. Interested persons should visit to register to become a volunteer or donate to this 501(c)(3) non-profit.
