RENO — The annual residential wood burning color code season ended on Feb. 28. The Washoe County Health District Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) uses the “Keep It Clean – Know the Code - Green, Yellow, Red Burn Code” program and the website www.ourcleanair.com to inform area residents whether or not lighting stoves or fireplaces is allowed, or advisable. The program runs annually from the first day of November through the last day of February.

The 2012/2013 Know the Code program and AQMD notified Washoe County residents of 23 Yellow and 5 Red Burn Code occurrences this season. In particular, January’s stagnant weather conditions contributed to cold temperatures, calm winds, and elevated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations. The burn code was Yellow or Red most of the month. The complete Know the Code 2012-13 calendar can be found at www.ourcleanair.com.

The Know the Code program will resume on Nov. 1.
