Tribune/Debra Reid - A 5,000-pound, smiling mountain biker was hoisted into place Tuesday outside the new Scheel's sporting goods store. Other larger-than-life bronze statues include a snowboarder, bowhunter, fly fisherman and a cutthroat trout.
Now, he will feel right at home in the new Scheels All Sports at the Sparks Marina.
A display of different presidents is being together in the store. Alongside Roosevelt will stand 13 other former presidents. Twelve of the presidents will be made of wax, while the remaining two will be giving animated, mechanical presentations about their lives and achievements. A plaque will be displayed by each wax president that gives a brief biography of their lives. Each include different elements of the president's personal life, such as where they attended college and who they were married to, descriptions of their accomplishments during their presidency and memorable quotations, such as John Adam's statement, "People and nations are forged in the fires of adversity." The 14 presidents that will be included in the display are Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Andrew Jackson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Frank D. Roosevelt, George Washington, Harry Truman, James Madison, John Adams, Ronald Reagan, John Kennedy, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.
"Steve Scheels, the CEO of Scheels, is passionate about history and wants customers to have an educational experience," Jason Loney of the Scheels marketing department explained.
This is not the only educational initiative in which the Scheels CEO has been involved. The Scheels stores offers several different workshops where customers can learn about running, cycling and other physical activities. Steve Scheels hopes to educate the public about the importance of staying active by hosting these workshops.
The Sparks location is the second to include these presidential replicas, the first of which was in Fargo, North Dakota. The 14 presidents were chosen based on the impact their choices while in office made on the American people.
"We chose the most influential presidents to be included in the display,” Loney said.
Out of these 14 influential leaders, two were chosen to have the capability to speak and move. Thomas Jefferson can be found sitting on a park bench and Abraham Lincoln will be set next to an imitation of the chair featured in the Lincoln Memorial. Each of these have motion sensors in them that detect when a customer walks by. Once activated, the president will give a short speech about his life and describe his role in American history.
The presidential display is not the only artistic portion of the new store. Lined along the walkway leading to the front entrance of Scheels are statues of different athletes, including a snowboarder and a mountain biker. Customers can admire the detailed sculputres and learn a little about American history while shopping around for sporting goods.
