Jessica Ellison tallied two second-half goals to lead Spanish Springs to a 6-0 win over Wooster in non-league girls soccer action.
The Cougars and Colts both scored one goal in the first half, but the visitors just happened to score on their own goal, handing Spanish Springs a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game.
The Purple and Teal scored its first legitimate goal with 15:44 to play in the first half on Kylie Oroszi's goal for a 2-0 edge.
“We were a little flat, but give some credit to Wooster. They played the offsides trap really well,” SSHS coach Mike Faker said. “We have a pretty fast group up top and they want to run. The offsides trap put the shackles on and slowed us down.”
Spanish Springs came out much better in the second half, although its first two shots on goal were directly at Wooster's keeper, and fans thought it would be much of the same.
However, the Cougars woke up midway through the second half when Carly Pengelly won a battle for the ball in the middle of the box with the goalkeeper and scored in the 62nd minute.
A little more than six minutes later, Ellison scored the first of her two goals on a cross by Laura Voss.
With 5:55 remaining in the game, Ellison took another cross at the top of the box and ripped a shot into the corner of the net for a 5-0 advantage.
Spanish Springs was not done. Less than a minute later, Lindsey Pengelly found herself in front of the goal with the ball and deposited it in for the final 6-0 margin.
Cougars keeper Erica Lorenz played most of the game and helped keep the shutout intact even though she saw very little action.
“The thing I liked the most about it was when I put all the back-up players in, we scored more goals, and the level of play didn't drop down,” Faker said. “That's something I’ve never really had here, so that was very nice.”
Spanish Springs is back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Galena for another non-league affair.
