Occupants of the motel were quickly evacuated to the parking area as firefighters extinguished the fire in the carport area and checked for extension into the second floor motel rooms. Fire and smoke damage was limited to the carport ceiling and the floor of the two motel rooms above the fire. Several other rooms near the fire received some smoke from the fire.
The fire was across the street from Sparks Fire Station 1, so firefighters were on scene in less than a minute from the time they were notified. However, due to the reductions in staffing, firefighters responded from Fire Stations 1, 2, and 3 in order to get necessary personnel on scene.
There were no reported injuries of the motel residents or responding firefighters. Early reports indicated that two residents were treated by REMSA, however later reports indicated that these two residents and a small child were placed in the ambulance to stay warm during the early morning fire and were not injured.
Fire investigators are still trying to piece together how this fire started. The fire did start in the carport area and investigators will be conducting additional interviews to try to determine the exact cause of the early morning fire.
