The Sparks Railroaders couldn't have had a better outing on a better opening day for early season softball.

Sparks won both of its games today in a tournament held at Yerington High School, 7-4 and 5-4 in games shortened due to time limit.

"It's the best start that we've had since I've been here," Sparks softball coach Frank Avilla said. "Pitchers pitched well, hitters hit the heck out of the ball. There were only four errors on the day. Our focus seems to be really really there and I'm really excited about what they're doing so far."

Sparks took a quick jump out of the gate against both opponents to secure the wins. Sparks beat Dayton 7-4 with Cheyenne Ranson recorded the win for Sparks. She pitched for three innings, got three strikeouts and only allowed two hits and one walk with just one earned run. Katie Hippert closed out the final inning, giving up one win and walk.

Amanda Mahon went 2 for 2 with a double that scored two for the Railroaders.

Sparks' other win came against Silver Stage with a close 5-4 final. Ace Sabrina Martinez pitched four innings, with eight strikeouts. She gave up a lone walk, three hits and two earned runs.

Ally Tallman went 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs. Kristina Avilla was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double.

Sparks finishes up tournament play today taking on Carlin at 10:30 a.m. and Truckee at 4:30 p.m.
