An early morning accident on Interstate-80 near Victorian Avenue sent 12 people to the hospital and closed portions of the interstate for about three hours, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers.

At about 3 a.m., a blue Subaru sedan and a white Chrysler van were parked on the side of the interstate. The van had a flat tire. Two males were standing outside the cars when the van was struck by a red Chevrolet pickup.

The force from the collision pushed the van into the blue Subaru, which was parked in front on the side of the interstate, Troopers said.

Twelve people from the two parked vehicles were transported to area hospitals by ground ambulance; seven to Renown Regional Medical Center and five to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center. One of the two motorists changing the tire sustained fatal injuries and died at the hospital, while the other sustained serious injuries. The other 10 injuries are being claimed as moderate. The driver of the pickup was not injured and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

All lanes have been reopened as of 6 a.m.

Witnesses to the accident, or anyone with information, should contact Trooper Eric Gallagher at 689-4661 regarding case No. 0808250080.
