The Spanish Springs girls golf team sits atop the team standings after Day 1 of the Division I State Girls Golf Championships at WildCreek Golf Course in north Sparks.

The Cougars turned in a team total of 333 Monday, 14 strokes better than second-place McQueen. The state girls golf tournament is perennially dominated by Las Vegas-area schools, but the southern Nevada teams were well back after the first day of competition. Coronado (356) and Arbor View (357) were the top performing south schools on the first day of the tournament, but they sat in third and fourth respectively.

Spanish Springs was in the lead because it got four golfers turn in scores of 90 or better. North Region champion. sophomore Katrina Prendergast of Spanish Springs, turned in a score of 76 and was in third overall among the individual leaders. Her junior teammate, Trae Jones, was three strokes back with a 79 and sat in fourth overall.

Kirstie Settas shot an 88 for the Cougars' third counting score and Sam Sorensen carded a 90 for the fourth score.

Spanish Springs threw out the 97 of Katrina Weil and the 102 of Joanna Perry.

At last week's North regional tournament, Spanish Springs led by 11 strokes after the first day of competition. However, the Cougars regional title dreams came crashing down after McQueen caught fire on Day 2, catching and surpassing the SSHS squad.

The Lancers, who also just edged out Spanish Springs for a regular season High Desert League title, will have to beat Spanish Springs by at least 15 strokes Tuesday and hope no southern Nevada team also gets red hot.

Green Valley's Alex Kaui leads the field with a 70 while Basic's Jamie Danizio is second with a 75.

Second round tee times begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The last group, which includes Danizio and Prendergast, goes off at 11 a.m.
