SPARKS — At 10:01 p.m. Sunday, Sparks Police officers responded to the report of shots being fired in the area of the 7300 Block of Rota Court in Sparks.

Responding officers located several individuals in the area including the victim Cameron Swain. Swain was suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper chest. The scene was secured and Swain was transported by ambulance to Renown Medical Center.

Also located on scene were the suspect, Newton Byars-Swain, and two uninvolved neighbors who had responded to the scene with their own firearms in an attempt to assist.  The two neighbors indicated they heard gunshots then screaming so they ran to the residence armed with handguns in an effort to assist.

The suspect, Newton Byars-Swain, was seated in the driveway area of the house with a significant amount of blood on his clothing and body.

The investigation indicated that Cameron Swain is Newton Byars-Swain’s 26-year-old son.  The two of them had some verbal altercations during the day.  Ultimately they had an altercation that turned physical.  During this altercation, Byars-Swain produced a handgun and struck Cameron Swain in the head with it. He then fired the gun into Cameron Swain’s chest. Cameron Swain’s mother and another resident helped disarm Byars-Swain and waited for police to arrive.

All involved parties were interviewed and evidence, including the gun, was collected from the scene. Byars-Swain was taken into custody and will be booked at the Washoe County Jail on one count of attempted homicide and one count of battery with a deadly weapon with substantial bodily harm.

Cameron Swain is in stable condition at Renown Medical Center.
