RENO — From now through March 20, the Academy for Career Education (ACE) High School is accepting donations of clean, working, saleable items for its “Garage Sale” fundraiser to be held March 28 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Donations are accepted from 7 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on weekdays and donors are asked to check in at the school’s front desk, located at 2800 Vassar St. in Reno, just north of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The ACE High School “Garage Sale” is a fundraiser designed to help students pay to attend the annual SkillsUSA competition.

SkillsUSA is an organization comprised of students, teachers and industry professionals that prepares students for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. ACE High School is a free, public high school that focuses on core academic curriculum (reading, writing, math, science) while infusing construction- and engineering-career-applicable methods into everyday teaching techniques. Each year, ACE students compete in a variety of events at the state competition in the hope of bringing home a gold medal and moving on to the national competition. To date, ACE has placed five times at the national competition and holds 22 gold medals in 10 categories. All ACE students are members of SkillsUSA.

“Right now we have approximately 50 students hoping to compete at SkillsUSA and unfortunately, we just don’t have the funds to send them all,” said Leigh Berdrow, administrator at ACE High School. “That’s where the ‘Garage Sale’ comes in. We’ll have a variety of items available for sale and we’re hoping to raise $3,500 so that all of the kids are able to go. Last year 22 students placed at SkillsUSA and we’re hoping for even more this year.”
