The early March winds are helping clear out any smoke from wood burning stoves and fireplaces and the Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) has suspended the Green, Yellow, Red Wood Burning and Better Air Guide for this wood burning season. The Wood Burning Guide started during the fall of 1987, and the AQMD has not had to call a wood burning ban for approximately the past 15 years, proving that both technology and public participation work to control air pollution.

Air quality monitoring and reporting equipment make it easier for staff to determine if wood burning is causing pollution problems, or if winter road sanding is the issue.

The AQMD thanks both the media and the public for continuing to make this program such a success. The Green, Yellow, Red Wood Burning Guide will begin again on November 1st. However, air quality levels can always be obtained, seven days a week, 24-hours a day, 365 days per year by calling 785-4110.
