MIAMI — Miami Marlins pitcher Mark Buehrle says he’s not happy that Miami-Dade County voters decided to keep a ban on pit bulls.

Buehrle and his family bought a home in neighboring Broward County so they could keep their pet pit bull, Slater. Miami-Dade has banned pit bulls since 1989.

The pitcher and his wife, Jamie, have joined pit bull advocates in pushing for the ban to be overturned. On Tuesday, 63 percent of Miami-Dade voters chose to keep the ban.

Buehrle said Wednesday that he thinks “there’s a lot of ignorance out there” about pit bulls.

Jamie Buehrle says Tuesday’s vote shows that education about pit bull breeds and responsible pet ownership must continue.

The ban’s critics say it’s too costly and vague. Supporters say it protects people from aggressive dogs.
